K9 by Kelly Jadon

7/28/2014

Picture
“This is the K9 Unit,”
the speaker sounds
Come out with your hands in the air.”
no response
in less than two minutes
bit the suspect twice
the man grabbed the dog’s head
pushing him under swamp water
cornered by police guns

leaping into the cruiser
water bucket filled
thirst slaked
alert upon his
rubber matt
working 12-hour nights
patrol, search, seizure
sniffing out ecstasy, explosives
accelerants

he tracks children,
cadavers, lost Alzheimer’s patients
currency
methamphetamines, hashish,
crack,
escaped prisoners
into water, ravines, woods

he is German Shepherd
Belgian Malinois, Labrador
Doberman
Bloodhound to track
Jack the Ripper

loyal, he intercedes
for others
at risk to himself
shot in the face
stabbed
nearly drowned
“He’s like my son”

only to retreat
at shift’s end
to rest
at the foot of his
handler’s bed
“a member of the family”
